DSTI Awards R500 Million in Research Grants to Universities
Major funding boost for academic research institutions across South Africa.
The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation has announced the allocation of R500 million in research grants to universities across South Africa, supporting cutting-edge research in priority areas.
The grants will fund research projects in areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, renewable energy, and healthcare innovation.
Grant Distribution
Funding has been allocated to 26 universities, with grants ranging from R5 million to R50 million based on project scope and impact potential.
Priority Research Areas
The grants specifically target research in the following priority areas:
- Artificial Intelligence: Machine learning applications for healthcare and agriculture
- Biotechnology: Indigenous knowledge systems and biopharmaceuticals
- Renewable Energy: Solar, wind, and hydrogen technologies
- Healthcare Innovation: Disease prevention and treatment research
The Deputy Director-General for Research Development stated, "These grants represent our commitment to building research capacity in South Africa. We are investing in the next generation of scientists and innovators who will drive our knowledge economy forward."
