South Africa Joins Global Quantum Computing Initiative
Historic partnership to advance quantum computing research and development.
South Africa has become a founding member of the Global Quantum Computing Initiative (GQCI), a historic partnership that will see the country collaborate with leading nations in advancing quantum computing research and development.
The initiative brings together 15 countries committed to developing quantum technologies that could revolutionize computing, cryptography, and scientific research.
South Africa's Role
As a founding member, South Africa will contribute to and benefit from:
- Research Collaboration: Joint research projects with international quantum computing labs
- Talent Exchange: Programs for South African researchers to work at leading quantum facilities
- Infrastructure Development: Support for building quantum computing infrastructure locally
- Education Programs: Curriculum development for quantum computing education
Investment and Infrastructure
The government has committed R500 million over five years to support South Africa's participation in the initiative, including the establishment of a National Quantum Computing Centre in Pretoria.
"Quantum computing represents the future of technology," said the Minister. "By joining this initiative, we are ensuring that South Africa remains at the forefront of scientific and technological advancement."
