New Framework for Ethical AI Development Released
Guidelines to ensure artificial intelligence systems are developed responsibly and ethically in South Africa.
The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation has released a comprehensive framework for ethical AI development, establishing guidelines to ensure artificial intelligence systems are developed and deployed responsibly across South Africa.
The framework addresses growing concerns about AI bias, privacy, transparency, and accountability, providing a roadmap for organizations developing or implementing AI solutions.
Core Principles
The Ethical AI Framework is built on five core principles:
- Fairness: AI systems must be designed to avoid discrimination and ensure equitable outcomes for all South Africans
- Transparency: Organizations must be open about how AI systems make decisions
- Accountability: Clear lines of responsibility must exist for AI-driven decisions
- Privacy: Personal data must be protected in accordance with POPIA and international standards
- Safety: AI systems must be tested rigorously to prevent harm
Implementation Requirements
Organizations implementing AI solutions will be required to conduct ethical impact assessments and maintain documentation of their AI systems' decision-making processes.
"This framework positions South Africa as a leader in responsible AI development," said the Director-General. "We are ensuring that as we embrace AI technologies, we do so in a way that protects and benefits all our citizens."
